After months and months of submissions myself, I realized the task itself can be, and is, very daunting. Without the expertise and proper tools your efforts will be fruitless. If you are not already aware of this, part of your seo effort has to be dedicated to building a strong back linking strategy. You will hear arguments about whether it is a matter of quantity versus a matter of quality. From my experiences, quality wins out. And over time you will build quantities of quality links. This will prove to be more effective in the long term. The search engine spiders are getting smarter, and don't like sites that use link farms, purchase a bunch of links, and don't have good relevant content.
Here is a good tip to remember. When dealing with Google, for example, their goal is to give people the exact search results they are looking for. So, when someone types in "used cars" Google does NOT want them landing on a page that sells car air fresheners. So relevance is key to your top rankings.
So how do we achieve this? There are many ways to do this, both free and paid. Let's talk about some of the free ways. This is actually pretty simple. Type in the search term for which you want to be ranked for (into Google). Take note of the top sites in the search results. Now for the fun part. Type the following command into Google:
link: www.(the site from the search results).com and hit enter. You must have a space between the colon and the website or it will produce no results. This will produce a list of all the sites that the top site links to. Simply visit the sites and see what you need to do to get linked to that site as well. You can't put a price on using the same linking strategies as the top sites on the net. You are simply copying their success. And believe me it works.
